Elena Saldago

Europe argues over spending cuts

people

It might appear from the outside that in Europe the big argument over spending cuts has been settled. After all, most governments are taking the axe to their budgets. Even while growth remains anaemic finance ministers are reducing deficits and bringing down their debt. So from Madrid to Athens to Dublin to Rome it is the era of smaller government, with public sectors being pruned and welfare costs reduced.

Gaz De France may not enter fray

Gaz-de-France

But being a government firm, Gaz De France is unlikely to jump in the fray to avoid upsetting the state promoters or the section in the government opposed to higher foreign stake in Petronet.

Technically, the state-run promoters cannot put any condition or stop ADB from selling its stake to any individual or entity of its choice. In the past, Indian steel-to-oil conglomerate and three major Spanish firms had evinced interest. Even Lakshmi Mittal cannot be ruled out. In the event, ADB could well opt for offloading its equity in the market.

Last time round ADB wanted to exit, there were reports that NRI steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal was interested. His reported interest in entering Petronet had drawn sharp reactions from GAIL and IndianOil. Then chairmen of GAIL and Indian Oil wrote letters to Petronet and the government to stake their claims. This, industry sources said, upset Mittal who withdrew to avoid putting the ministry in a difficult situation.
