French Budget Minister To Meet Germany’s Schaeuble Tuesday
French Budget Minister Francois Baroin will meet German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble and German parliamentarians in Berlin Tuesday, the French minister’s diary shows.
The meeting comes as France prepares its 2011 budget under pressure to revise its forecast for gross domestic product expansion down from 2,5% for next year.
Baroin is currently meeting French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Prime Minister Francois Fillon and Finance Minister Christine Lagarde to discuss growth prospects and the deficit.
France and Germany are keen to be at the forefront of the reform of economic governance in Europe in order to prevent future crises. They have submitted joint proposals to strengthen the euro-zone pact to a task force chaired by European Union President Herman Van Rompuy in September.
Germany has put pressure on other euro-zone countries to push ahead with fiscal consolidation, a move it will embrace from 2011. It’s in the process of implementing a EUR80 billion austerity package that will start to become effective from next year.
